During 1986, Brentwood commenced a research and development project in conjunction with the Australian CSIRO Meat Research Group (a Government organisation specialising in research). The purpose was to develop the range of Prebreakers and Gut Cutters for the processing of waste meat in abattoirs prior to the rendering process.
PrebreakersIt was believed if machines were developed based on the Brentwood industrial shredding machine, it would be far superior to the machines already existing in the industry. These were high speed machines involving high maintenance costs, high power requirements and high noise levels. As a result of this and three years work, Brentwood offered to the meat industry a range of prebreakers from 7.5kW to 30kW for handling bone and meat waste and a specialised machine of 15kW for handling of gut and offal. |

The CSIRO Meat Research Group produced three reports following this research which are available for download:
Since then, a large number of machines have been sold into the meat industry in Australia and New Zealand and now a large
percentage of all abattoirs within these two countries are equipped with the Brentwood machines.
The Az 40/2M 30kW Meat Prebreaker, was first produced in 1995. This machine can achieve a production rate of between 15 and 20 T/Hour with a mixture of hard & soft material with 31mm cutters. The production rate of the 15kW machine is, of course, about half.
The Az 50HD 37kW Meat Prebreaker is a further development on the Az40/2 with wider shaft centres and heavier construction. The machine provides the advantage of being able to grab large items such as heads due to the wider shaft centres over the Az40/2 model range. Marginal increases in production rate are also possible because of this improved grabbing.

The AZ 50/2M 37kW Meat Prebreaker, was first produced in 1998. This machine can achieve a production rate of between 25 and 30 T/Hour with a mixture of hard & soft material with 31mm cutters. The standard cutting chamber length is 1500mm. The machine is supplied with varying cutter widths from 20mm to 40mm.
The AZ 80/60M 60kW Meat Prebreaker, was first produced in 1999. This machine can achieve a production rate of between 27 and 35 T/Hour with a mixture of hard & soft material with 31mm cutters. The standard cutting chamber length is 1500mm. The major advantage of this machine is the width of the cutting chamber of 650mm, which allows half condemned beef carcasses to be processed. The machine is supplied with varying cutter widths from 31mm to 40mm.
As a further development in 1996, the first Stainless Steel Prebreaker was offered to the meat industry for use in the food production side of the business. The full range of machines in stainless steel are now being developed for use in the food industry generally. |

Az 15WLG Gut Cutter cuts offal, gut & soft material into consistent sizes, discreet pieces. This results in using less water for washing. Tests conducted have shown very low fat losses and virtually no emulsification of the material. Batch cooking times can be reduced by approximately 25%
The knife action of the Brentwood Gut Cutter cuts material outwards from the machine centre towards high tolerance hardened & machined stationary fingers.
Machines are available with cutting chambers from 500mm to 1200mm long provides production rates across the range from 2000 to 4500 kg/hr
The AZ 50HD G Gut Cutter has been developed for higher production applications and utilises a single shaft design with the same shaped cutter as the Az 15WL G Gut cutter, however substantially larger in diameter. This machine achieves production rates of up to 7000 kg/hr. The ability to grab larger items assists this machines ability to process the larger volumes. The machine uses many drive items such as shafts gears as the heavy duty Az 50HD prebreaker. |
